The Rise of Bangladesh’s Cricket Stars

The Rise of Bangladesh’s Cricket Stars

In the first quarter of 2020, Bangladesh had a remarkable turnaround after coming from behind to clinch an unexpected Test win in New Zealand and recently won in the ODI series in South Africa. Taskin Ahmed, Litton Das, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz have all been an integral aspect of these remarkable results achieved by Bangladesh.

Even though many considered their performance as a flip flop, they have always caused one of the most memorable upsets in cricket. Litton, a red ball no 7 and a white ball opener has scored more runs than he isn’t. Mehidy has grown to become a reliable utility player both home and away, Taskin was awarded the Player of the series during their 2-1 win against South Africa in the ODI series.

Gaining Their Stride

The trio are currently in very good form in their international cricket careers after experiencing a couple of dark periods. Litton was dropped twice during his career. Taskin was almost forgotten after a series of bad form and Mehidy mostly performs in home games.

Becoming a cricket star in Bangladesh is very easy but remaining a star, keeping up with a great form, delivering on your promise, remaining consistent, and avoiding the difficulties associated with sudden fame is usually more difficult. However, the trio remain focused, consistent, and provided top quality for a longer period than most big players.

In Bangladesh, Taskin came into the scene in 2014 and became the big fast hope. He is pacey even with his tall and amazingly built physique. During the 2015 World Cup, he attained about 150kph. However, he fell out of grace rapidly by 2017. He could only take seven wickets at 97.42 during his first five Tests even with all the promises made at the beginning.  He ended up taking 16 wickets at 38.93 in five Tests after his return in 2021. Mehidy was among the top cricket players in Bangladesh with an amazing record of 19 wickets during his debut Test. He helped Bangladesh achieve victory over England which made him very famous. His great form continued until Bangladesh’s 100th Test in Colombo. However, he fell under a great spell for about five or more years after that.

Mehidy’s Troubles

Mehidy had a significant problem going on tours. His home and away record before the South Africa tour was an average of 23.43 and 53.43 respectively. In his first three years, he was only able to take 47 Test wickets at 53.28 overseas.

Mehidy also fell out of grace in the T20Is. He was replaced by Mahedi Hasan. Mehidy was in very bad shape when Nayeem Hasan was selected in his place in February 2020 during the single Test against Zimbabwe. During this period, the pandemic struck. Taskin was absent from the Bangladesh squad for about two years and it almost seemed like he won’t be returning, especially with the indefinite shutdown of training facilities.

During this period, Litton achieved the individual ODI score achieved by any Bangladesh player against Zimbabwe. This was among his best periods as a cricket player after a couple of unsuccessful attempts after his debut in 2015. Litton previously dominated the local cricket for a few seasons before joining the Bangladesh squad but was unable to replicate the domestic success internationally. He was out of the main squad for about 18 months and his bad form continues. A 100 in the Asia Cup or 94 in the World Cup appears promising but this gained a few infrequent returns. So, Litton though his great form has started after striking two hundreds against Zimbabwe. Check out more about cricket live score at Babu88 here.

Litton Gains Form

Litton’s form significantly grew, achieving his first two Test hundred and white ball runs that won the match against South Africa and Afghanistan. Taskin returned to the national squad in January 2021 and performed remarkably against South Africa and pulling a couple of excellent performances. He continued to train and improve his diet, skills, pace, and fitness throughout the Covid 19 pandemic. Although he didn’t record a good amount of wickets in 2021, he still played excellently. However, he won the series trophy even with his not-so-god performance in the home side.

Positive Outlook For The Trio

More significant tests await Litton, Taskin, and Mehidy. They need to display a couple of extraordinary performances in the upcoming T20 World Cup in the year, as well as the 50-over World Cup that will be held next year. The trio has brushed up themselves after a series of bad spells. They also have access to any support from coaches and training facilities. They need to build their confidence as they would want to avoid losing their place once again.
